MIY UV+Heat Vacuum Oven

Postby Storen » Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:30 pm

I am starting this tread as continuation of the discussion about vacuum curing in the "Casting SoulsCast" thread.

I looked for some low-cost options to the pro ovens. I also wanted to see if it is possible to combine both heat+vacuum and UV to shorten the process.

What do you think about the following combination of components? I know it is not ideal but do you think it will do the job? The total price of all components is under $350.

- Glass vacuum chamber:

- 5.0CFM 2-Stage Vacuum Pump:

- 140F-460F Programable Heater

- 4x 10W UV Lights (for all 4 sides)

A new thread is probably best as the other one was getting cluttered, haha.

I don't think that heat source is going to work with a glass chamber. It's an induction cooktop which only works with ferrous metals, I believe.

Maybe a steel plate inside the chamber that would heat up via induction?

I researched the DIY methods myself before buying the ready made version and quickly got overwhelmed with all the marijuana talk, lmao.

Yes, was thinking that too. A polished steel plate that would act as a mirror would be ideal.
Still, with this MIY solution neither the heat or the UV is going to be distributed as well as in the dedicated professional ovens.

After UV curing for 2hr I removed the print to see how it had cured.
I noticed that the back was not fully cured and decided to put it upside down under Lizard light to see how it would do with heat.
It was fully cured and had no cracks.
Don't know the exact temperature the lizard light goes up to and it seemed to have worked.

i know most people will respond to this post with contradictions, but from my experience, heat during cure only causes problems.

LITERALLY only removed the heat from our curing process and casting improved leaps and bounds.

if you're not getting a good cure, lack of heat isn't the issue. not enough UV or you need a better reducing atmosphere.

just my 2 cents.

polished aluminum reflects better than steel.
