Using DSLR UV Filter with the Projector for Movie

Postby samatheang » Sun May 01, 2016 1:48 am

I am planning to use the projector for movie sometimes, so instead of putting the projector's UV filter back in, I wanna use a DSLR UV Filter like the one in the link below to attach to the close-up lens adapter and attach it to the projector's focus ring. Does anyone know if the DSLR UV Filter work the same as the one inside the projector? Thanks.

I don't see why it shouldn't work. Unless the built-in filter is much better at blocking UV rays than dlsr uv filters.

Yeah, that' s what I am trying to find out. Not sure if they are the same or not. I will try googling some more. Thanks anyway, Emil.

Interesting idea. Might be a good option for faster curing resins as well.

Tried it. Unfortunately it doesn't work. Doesn't seem to filter the proper UV range. Anyone know what type of glass is used in the projectors filter? Its not low e glass. If anyone knows it might be possible to place a slightly larger piece in front of the shutter.

How about just using the original piece and putting it in front of the front window? Print a frame for it to pop into.

I thought of that too. Its for sure smaller than the window, but maybe not smaller than the printable area.

Just kinda curious, the projector is outputting some small amount of UV even with the factory filter in place.

Are you more concerned about people stepping in front of the projector and taking a UV dose? I would think that the intensity of it would fall off with distance, so unless you put your face right up to the lens, is it really a problem?

Another solution is to buy another lamp assembly, leave it unmodified and swap them out when you want to watch a movie. That way you do not eat into the lifetime of the bulb that you use for printing and vice versa for the movie viewing.
