no motion from Z axis

Hello,
I just setup my machine and am to the section where you home the machine for the first time '$h'
I am connected on COM 3 and can get a response from the arduino (appears to be a grbl shield for motion control?) Anyway I am passing the 2 $h and seeing the warning but am not getting motion. grbl settings all reply over com $ works and all that jazz, it gives me the grbl menu just no actual motion control.
re-read the instructions a few times and then started trying to trouble shoot.
Power adapter is plugged in (green light is on the power supply but I havent tested the voltage output), serial over usb is working and creation workshop is connected (also verified serial coms with coolterm and the arduino ide).
